Plantain is a super common family of weeds that grow just about everywhere there’s full sun. Plantain is used for spells and rituals for personal strength, protection, healing and to give you energy and courage. Add to charm bags for protection or hang above your door to ensure only pleasant people enter or hang in the car to guard against the intrusion of evil spirits. Add to healing sachets and charm bags then place beneath the bed to keep illness away.
Plantain leaves are edible, and can be used for all kinds of medicinal purposes. The leaves are antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-toxic and have been used since ancient Greece as a remedy for a zillion different problems, from the common cold to snake bites. Some people today even believe it can help alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy, although there hasn’t been any quality research to back up these claims.
One of the easiest ways to use plantain is topically. It can be made into an infusion and poured on skin irritations, or made into a salve and used for cuts, burns, and insect stings. Plantain leaf tea is also good for relieving cold symptoms. Please be sure to talk to a health practitioner before using this or any other herb as medicine! Moreover, plantain is not safe for pregnant women, nor is it safe for people with blood disorders or a history of blood clots.
Plantain is associated with Venus and the element of Earth, as well as Orcus, Persephone and Hades. It’s one of the nine sacred Anglo-Saxon herbs mentioned in the Lacnunga, in which it’s referred to as “waybread”. In witchcraft, plantain is used to protect the home and car, to ward off snakes, and generally to empower spellwork. Other magical associations of plantain include healing and strength.
