This bright-yellow or even orange flower blooms near water around Summer Solstice. This is why most customs and traditions associated with it are also related to Summer Solstice celebrations. In Vologda Region of Russia, this flower was included in a traditional Kupala’s banya broom (Bathing or Sauna Broom); in other regions was made solely out of Globeflowers. These flowers were also laid on a Sauna floor and left like that. Girls frequently included it in their Kupala’s Day flower crowns and bouquets used for divination. This flower is best collected on Kupalnitsa Day in the morning. Dew collected from this flower at the same time may be stored and used in healing.
Many legends surround this flower. Some consider it the mysterious Odolen-Weed that scares away any evil and protects travelers. People say that even touching the flower Globeflower views as an insult and dies if someone stares at it for too long. Only young girls could stay next to the Globeflower and talk to it, whispering and sharing their secrets.
