These vibrant blue flowers from Asia transform a simple tea drink into a magical blue tea/tisane. They are caffeine-free herbal infusion that has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia and has only recently been introduced to areas outside of the region. The tisane is made from steeping the flowers of the butterfly pea plant. Butterfly pea flower tea is consumed either hot or cold and the cold version is often mixed with honey, mint, passion fruit, cinnamon, and ginger. The tea is often drank after a meal and is as common in parts of Asia as chamomile is here in the United States.
Note: The butterfly pea flowers require acid/citrus to change to the bright blue color. The additional of more lemon, lime, orange or other citrus will enhance the tea’s color.
